Our Aims

The RufUs Charitable Trust assists people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in Adelaide and increasingly in country areas of South Australia. The key aspect of our work is to outfit homes for people who are transitioning into housing who were previously homeless or at risk of homelessness.

In 2016 RufUs outfitted over 500 homes. Around half of the people whose homes we outfitted were women and children escaping domestic/family violence. We work with 34 service providers and organisations in the sector across Adelaide who find houses for their clients. We provide furniture, household goods, whitegoods, linen, clothing, toys and other things needed to turn those houses into homes.

We have also provided meals, street swags and supplies to those on the streets and education and advocacy around homelessness prevention.

RufUs is run by a team of dedicated volunteers who believe passionately in the fundamental worth and dignity of all people, and who believe that a safe home is a human right. It is a not-for-profit charity with tax deductibility for donations over $2. We believe this work is simply a matter of Adelaide coming together to assist each other. You can help by donating good quality secondhand goods and furniture, or equally by cash donations to assist with our running costs which are around $75,000 per year currently. This is likely to increase as the number of homes we outfit tends to double each year.

We are always interested in hearing from potential volunteers and corporate sponsors, and people who would like us to come and speak to their community groups.

Please contact us for further information at info@rufus.org.au. To donate furniture or household items please contact us at donations@rufus.org.au (for small items able to be collected by car or van. For furniture/whitegoods/larger items please call our collections team on 0415 757 450 between 8am and 8pm Monday to Friday.

Our specific aims are:

1. To outfit houses with good quality secondhand furniture, whitegoods and household items for people who are moving into supportive accomodation who were previously homeless or at risk of homelessness due to domestic/family violence or any other reasons.

2. To provide food, clothing, street swags, care packs, nutritional supplements and hugs to those who are homeless.

3. To provide services to those who have gained supportive accommodation that assists them with their transition to, and retention of their accommodation.

4. To educate and raise community awareness of the causes of homelessness, and to break down stigmas, stereotypes and myths surrounding homelessness.

5. To empower those who are homeless by giving them a voice, allowing them to make their own decisions about their future and allowing them to take control of their destiny.

6. To advocate for those who are homeless when they are unable to have a voice.
